Ecclesiology is the study of the nature of the Church.  The Greek work ekklesia meant "assembly" and came to refer to the company of believers in Jesus Christ.  At various times in the Church's history, the term has been used to refer to the physical church, the local church, the hierarchical church, and the invisible church.  Early on the Church was designated one, holy, catholic and apostolic.  Vatican Council II reformed the notion that the Church refers only to the clergy and defined it a the pilgrim people of God and the priesthood of all believers.
