Understanding Call Numbers

Locating Books by Call Number:

  • The Library of Congress (LC) classification system arranges books by subject area using a combination of letters and numbers.
  • The first row in the call number consists of letters. These are shelved alphabetically:   BR  BT  BV  BX  DE  HA  PN

BV

BV

BX

BX

823

823

177

2200

.B613

.H6

.A2

.A7213

  • The second row numbers are arranged within the category of the first row—numerically

  • The third row is read both alphabetically and then as a decimal number

  • Sometimes, a fourth row may be included. These appear in the same alpha-numeric ordering as the third row (i.e. BR 726 .C463 T54)
  • A year of publication may also be included at the end of the call number (i.e. BR 726 .C463 T54 1999)

Locate Reserve Books Using the Online Catalog

  • Using the ONLINE Catalog, search for the book by either title and/or author.
  • On the record page for the book, click the "Where to Find It" tab. The Location will be identified as Library - Beran - Course Reserves. This tab also includes the call number and the book's status (whether it is availble for check out).
  • Books are arranged on the RESERVE SHELVES in call number order.
