Access by Visitors

Use of the Library by Individuals Outside the UST Community

  • The Beran Library extends a controlled use of the facilities to individuals outside the St. Mary's Seminary and University of St. Thomas communities who want to conduct research in the area of theology. We require photo identification with a current address and we require a sign-in at the front desk. A photocopy of your photo identification will be kept on file for a semester.
  • Minors must be accompanied with a parent or guardian at all times and do not have permission to use the computers at the Beran Library.

Identification for Visitors

Cardinal Beran Library Visitor Policy

Under certain limited circumstances, visitors not affiliated with St. Mary’s Seminary may be allowed access to the Beran Library:

  • Priests and Deacons of the Diocese are welcome to use the library and have limited circulation privileges.  Priest and deacons visiting St. Mary’s seminary from other dioceses are welcome to visit the library but may not check out materials.  IDs are required to have access to Beran.
  • Guest scholars:

Visitors from non-seminary colleges or universities will need a letter from their academic dean, their academic advisor or the library director from their institution that asks us to grant access to a guest scholar.  The letter needs to state what the specific research will be and how long the guest scholar needs to use the library.  An e-mail is sufficient, but a letter is preferred.  A government ID (a state ID, a passport or a military ID) is also required.

Guest scholars from other seminaries will need to show a government ID and a student ID from their institution upon entry to the library.

Independent scholars with no affiliation to a seminary or a university will need a letter from a current UST faculty member as well as a government ID.

Guest scholars wishing to access Beran Library resources for the study of theology should contact the Library Chair (preferably before visiting the library).  Please call Dr. Mary Kelleher at 713-686-4345 x 248 or email kellehm@stthom.edu

Guest scholars may obtain limited circulation privileges by becoming a Friend of Beran Library for $40/year.

  • Alumni of UST in good standing can obtain a temporary library pass from the School of Theology office or the Library Chair.
  • Family members or friends can be admitted to the Beran Library whenever they are accompanied by the UST student, faculty or staff member.

Patrons looking for a place to study are welcome at the Doherty Library on the University of St. Thomas main campus.  Visitors to Doherty Library will need two photo IDs in order to be allowed access to the library.  For the Doherty Library visitor policies, go to http://www.stthom.edu/Public/index.asp?page_ID=1941
